Casa de Las Bugambilias B&B will be our home base. This is one of three B&Bs the Cabrera family own in Oaxaca. The beautifully decorated rooms will entice you to stay inside, but there will be too much for you to see and do! The breakfasts here are visually stunning as well as delicious. Chef Pilar Cabrera will prepare our lunches upstairs in the family restaurant, La Olla.
Day 1, Feb. 28 - We meet that evening after everyone arrives for a quick introduction and snack before you retire for the evening.
Day 2, Feb. 29 - After your beautiful breakfast made by the staff at Las Bugambilia's, we will leave with Rene on a short walking tour of Oaxaca to help orient you. We will, of course, point out museums and places you may want to return and visit.
We'll head back to our base for our first lesson with Lynn Whipple spending the rest of the day capturing what we have seen with Reportage Drawing and Painting. Lunch will be onsite.
That night, we will have our welcome fiesta prepared by Chef Pilar Cabrera. It is a very special treat.
Day 3, March 1 - Breakfast, then we will leave for a day of adventure visiting a farm that grows cochineal, the little bug that lives on nopal cactus and is used for natural dyeing, to the famous town of San Bartolo do Coyotepec where the family owned workshops have been making the beautiful black pottery for generations, and finally, to San Martin Ticajete where we will visit the famous woodcarver, Angelico Jiminez's workshop. Be prepared to be awed.
Lunch will be a boxed lunch prepared by Chef Pilar and dinner that night will be at a local taqueria.
Day 4, March 2 - Breakfast at the hotel and then class with Carla using the alejbrijes we saw the day before in our creations this day. Lunch will be on site and dinner will be on your own (a lit of restaurants will be provided).
Day 5, March 3 - Breakfast and then another fun travel day, this time to Etla where we will visit Arte Papel to see the process of making handmade paper, and to the former cotton mill now turned into a beautiful museum, Centro de Las Artes de San Augstin (CASA).
We will drive to our friend Susana Trilling's Seasons of My Heart Cooking School for an afternoon of making moles in her beautiful cooking school. My favorite it the chocolate dessert that you will make. Yummy!
You will be so full, dinner will not be necessary this evening.
Day 6, March 4 - Breakfast then class with Lynn on Mixed Media Collage and Found Objects, something she excels in! This will be a fun class. Lunch will be on site and that night we will have a cooking class at one of the Cabrera's other B&B's, Los Milagros where Ane Elena Martinez will teach. Just have to say, she's a caterer and a pastry chef so class will be delicious.
Day 7, March 5 - Breakfast on site then a full day of creating with Lynn on collage painting. That evening's dinner will be prepared by Chef Rodolfo Castellanos of Restaurante Orijen who is one of our favorite chefs in Oaxaca.
Day 8, March 6 - After breakfast, Carla will share her method of creating colorful wire animals and Lynn will finish up with some painting. Then lunch on your own and free time before we meet for a wrap up and our final dinner at Zicanda.
Day 9, March 7 - trip is over and everyone leaves or stays on to further explore Oaxaca and the environs.
This itinerary may change due to weather, new opportunities or the whim of the group.
