San Miguel has long been a haven for artists dating back to the 1930s when artists from around the world gathered there to practice their art. Now it will be home for our lessons with Carla and Lynn.
!Fiesta Flores! A Week in Flowers
Day 1, Feb. 17 After arriving at the Leon airport, the driver will bring you to Casa de la Noche where we will be waiting for you with margaritas and a light snack as we make introductions and talk about the week.
Day 2, Feb. 18 Each morning, the staff of la Noche will provide you with a wonderful breakfast in the patio. At 9:30 we will start today's lesson on Imaginary Flowers: Drawing, Watercolor and Mixed-Media on Paper with Carla in the studio. We will break for lunch and continue our lesson. At the end of the day, we will tone our large canvases with Lynn. Then there will be free time for you to explore this beautiful cobblestone city before we gather for our first dinner at La Azotea for jicama tacos.
Day 3, Feb. 19 Breakfast and then we will start our first lesson with Lynn. Expect to do a little dancing, a little singing and some loose, free fun painting and drawing. Lynn will lead you through her favorite fast and loose drawing exercises. We will enliven our mark-making as we celebrate big, fresh, colorful blooms. Next, we joyfully become absorbed in our layering process as we fill our canvases with color and line. All this yummy under painting will take us to the main event...playfully painting our luscious blooms! We will work with composition, design, line, shape, mark, color and most importantly, ways to get your personal voice onto the page.
We'll break for lunch, and the last hour we will do some collage prep with Carla.
Free time to explore the many galleries, coffee shops and museums in San Miguel. Tonight we will have a very special cooking class with a special friend of ours, Michael Coon in his beautiful kitchen.
Day 4, Feb. 20 Breakfast and a full day of painting Big Bold Blooms with Lynn with a break for lunch. We will begin painting in the large room.

The Unesco heritage site, San Miguel de Allende will be our destination for creating beautiful flora and fauna with the dynamic duo, Carla Sonheim and Lynn Whipple. We had so much fun with them in Oaxaca last year, that they are teaming up again to share their love of creating whimsical, gorgeous, luscious paintings.
This time, it will be flores galore, a whole week in flowers. Lynn has been creating big, bold and beautiful flower paintings that are visually stunning. And Carla, well, look left, how crazy wonderful is that? They will feed off of each other, creating lessons that will bloom together.

Airport: Leon International Airport, Guanajuato, Mexico. Code: BJX There is a United direct flight from Houston that leaves at and arrives in Guanajuato at . We will have a driver pick you up and deliver you to the hotel which will take about 1.5 hours. The return flight leaves around 12:30.
Casa de la Noche, or house of the night, a former bordello will be our home this week. Owned and renovated by expat, Barbara Poole, who also is a painter and supporter of the arts in San Miguel. The B&B is conveniently located five minutes from "centro."
Day 5, Feb. 21 Breakfast and at 9:30 we will head to the studio for collage paintings with Carla. We will break for lunch and then move to the larger room to continue painting on Big Bold Blooms with Lynn.
Tonight we will walk to the Rosewood hotel for a drink at sunset and then dinner will be at nearby Hechos with its wonderful large paintings surrounding the dining room.
Day 6, Feb. 22 Breakfast at the B&B and then off you go to explore with lunch on your own. We will meet back at the B&B before walking to our very special class with Hermes Arroyo, a mojiganga master in his family home where the whole family helps run the business. They are just delightful and then we will head to La Sirena for dinner and their very special ginger margaritas.
Day 7, Feb. 23 Breakfast At 9:30, we will head to the studio to create imaginary birds and animal characters with Carla. Then, Lynn and Carla will team teach mixed media garden paintings, adding birds and animals that will combine all the techniques you have learned this week.
Free time and tonight will be a cooking class with Ane Elena Martinez at Casa de la Noche. Ane Elena is a caterer and pastry chef from Puebla, Mexico.
Day 8, Feb. 24 Breakfast and then a free day to explore San Miguel. This evening we will have a very special dinner overlooking the city with our friend Paco Cardenas, a pastry chef in San Miguel. You will never forget this evening.
Day 9, Feb. 25 Everyone leaves for the airport at 8:30 am to make the 12:30 flight to Houston.

Carla Sonheim is a painter, illustrator, and creativity workshop instructor known for her fun and innovative projects and techniques designed to help adult students recover a more spontaneous, playful approach to creating. She is the author of three instructional art books, including Drawing Lab for Mixed Media Artists: 52 Creative Exercises to Make Drawing Fun; Drawing and Painting Imaginary Animals: A Mixed-Media Workshop and The Art of Silliness: A Creativity Book for Everyone. In 2012 she co-authored Creative Photography Lab with her husband, Steve Sonheim.
Lynn Whipple is a mixed media artist who describes herself as an art maker and all around enjoyer of life. Others would describe her as a creator of whimsical collages, paintings and assemblages. Her work is shown in galleries through the country and is collected by people all over the world. She is deeply grateful that she is able to live her life as an artist. She teaches workshops in person and on line through Carla's network.
