Encaustic artist Pam Nichols is traveling from Perth, Australia to teach her popular Dyeing to Rust workshop in Gig Harbor next June. There are two sessions, the first June 22-24 followed by June 26-28. No rusting experience is required but you should have basic knowledge of painting with encaustics. First session is full.

Participants will gain hands-on experience learning how to incorporate rusted papers, rusted fabric and rusty objects into encaustic paintings or to be used in mixed media projects. 

Topics will include safe handling of rusted materials and techniques.

Session One: Day 1, June 22 - Friday at 2:00 we begin our rusty adventure. Pam will show how to rust papers and you will have time to rust before our social hour (dinner).

Day 2, June 23 - We start early at 9 to give us plenty of time to rust and play. Lunch and dinner will be provided.

Day 3, June 24 - Final day starts at 9 as we continue working and playing with rusted materials on panels. At 3:00 we stop and clean up. Lunch will be provided.

Session One: One opening /  Session Two will follow the same itinerary but starting on June 26 and ending on June 28 5 spots open).

Student Supply List

  • 3-4 of your favorite colors of encaustic paint in tins with brushes
  • 1 or 2 Hake brushes, if you prefer these over chip brushes
  • your favorite tools
  • apron
  • rusty items to attach to your paintings
  • a roll of rice paper and a few sheets of natural papers such as silk tissue paper, mulberry paper or cotton papers
  • Butane torch head such as Iwatani 
  • 2 10"x10" gessoed panels 1.5" deep or encaustic boards
  • 2 12"x12" gessoed panels 1.5" deep or encaustic boards
  • any other materials you like to work with

Pam Nichols loves wax and rust and her popular workshops sell out quickly. She is an accomplished professional artist whose encaustic work has been shown throughout the Pacific Northwest, Arizona and Australia. Since attending the Pacific Northwest College of Art, she has developed and produced several art shows around Portland, and served as the President of Portland Open Studios. She has taught art classes throughout Oregon, Washington, and Hawaii and now lives in Perth, Western Australia.

Kathie Vezzani, who is hosting the workshop at her home in Gig Harbor, also is an artist who paints, rusts and waxes. She organizes trips for other artists and in a former life was a caterer. She has 23 years experience organizing trips for foodies and artists.
