San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico

Feb. 22 - March 1, 2020

Edgardo Kerlegand has held a paintbrush in his hand since the age of 12. Originally from Chiapas, he now paints and resides in San Miguel de Allende where we saw his work at La Fabrica Aurora, the renovated textile mill that houses artists and galleries.

His work is powerful and interesting. His use of the tiles is intriguing and makes you linger, following the colors around the canvas.

I am particularly drawn to his style of drawing, using loose, but thoughtful strokes to indicate the features of his subjects.

Edgardo is interested in orthodox iconography as well as German expressionists and Mexican muralism. He looks for the universality of men and women in his paintings and drawings. He will work with each artist to develop a topic or theme for their work this week. He will help the artists develop their personal energy through drawing exercises.

Day 1, Feb. 22. Everyone will arrive at the airport in Leon where we will have drivers waiting to bring you to Casa de la Noche. Depending on how you feel, we will either walk up to our favorite taco stand or you will say goodnight to rest after a day of traveling.

Day 2, Feb. 23. Each morning we will meet downstairs for breakfast, depending on the weather, either outside in the courtyard or inside at the dining room. At 9:30 we will meet in the studio to begin our day with Edgardo. This morning he will share the schedule with us and we will begin our day with warm up exercises. We will break for a quick walking tour and gorditas for lunch. We will finish the walking tour, ending back in the studio for the afternoon. This evening we will go to La Posadita to eat outside on its beautiful terrace overlooking the city skyline.

Day 3, Feb. 24. Breakfast then meet in the studio at 9:30. We will continue our lessons with Edgardo, breaking for lunch prepared by Chef Ana Elena Martinez (you will love her delicious meals). We will continue our lesson until around 4:30 when we will end for the day. You will have some free time to rest or explore before we meet at 7:00 for cooking class with Ana Elena.

Day 4, Feb. 25. Breakfast then meet in the studio at 9:30. We will paint this morning with Edgardo, break for lunch, then off we go to our amigo, Hermes Arrroyo’s mojiganga studio where you will begin creating your very own catrina. He and his family will make you feel as if their home is yours. It’s always a treat that we are able to share his studio with him and his family.

We will then make our way to the jardin before we climb the stairs to El Pegaso for our dinner on the rooftop, again looking out over the skyline.

Day 5, Feb. 26. Breakfast then another full day with Edgardo. Today we may walk to his studio at Aurora and have lunch there before returning to the studio to finish our work for the day. Dinner tonight is on your own.

Day 6, Feb. 27. Breakfast and a half day with Edgardo before lunch made by Ana Elena. Then our catrinas should be dry so we will make our way back to Hermes’s studio to finish painting and adorning our creations. When we are finished, we will leave time for you to wander before we meet for dinner at La Sirena for ginger margaritas and delicious seafood.

Day 7, Feb. 28. Breakfast and a full day in the classroom with Edgardo, breaking for lunch. Dinner will be at 7:00.

Day 8, Feb. 29. Breakfast and then we will finish up with Edgardo. We will have a show and tell of our work in the courtyard, then clean up the studio. The rest of the day is free for you to finish shopping or exploring San Miguel. This evening is our farewell dinner at another amigo’s home, Paco Cardenas, pastry chef and owner of Le Petit For.

Day 9, March 1. Casa de la Noche will have an early breakfast for us before we leave at 9:00 for Leon for our return trip home.
